Community group fights to improve housing for disabled

Cold, rainy weather conditions weren’t enough to keep a dedicated group of Nova Scotians from rallying for more support for the community’s disabled. On Wednesday, December 5, members of Community Homes Action Group (CHAG) and their friends and supporters, braved the weather to gather outside of Province House.

CHAG is of a group of citizens who are worried about the lack of housing options for Nova Scotians with disabilities. Some of the specific concerns they raised during the rally were centered on the lack of options for persons with disabilities outside of their own family situations.

“…Over 650 individuals out of a population of around 5,000 persons with developmental disabilities are on waiting lists for services, many of them living in near-crisis situations while waiting for appropriate residential placements,” said Wendy Lill, the co-chair of CHAG, during a presentation in the House of Assembly from 2011. “Many others are living in types of supportive housing unsuitable for their needs and detrimental to their health.”

In order to bring awareness to the government’s failure to respond to their demands, the group organized the rally one year and seven months after the presentation. Photos of their efforts are shown in the gallery below. A solidarity rally was also held in Sydney, Cape Breton on the same day.
